Founded in 1856 and nearly destroyed by the Civil War in July 1851, the city has moved beyond its roots in the railroad industry and now serves as an attractive location for a variety of industries. Civil War landmarks and remembrances of Madison’s railroad days are carefully preserved, through a variety of historic structures such as The Montgomery House, Strawberry Patch Park and several churches still located on Main Street.
Today, Madison grows at a steady and carefully plotted pace, rooted in its history as the state’s first master planned community that now includes a controlled growth plan with strict architectural and landscape guidelines. But while planning is important in Madison, so is having a lot of community fun. The city hosts monthly activities, maintains pristine parks and recreational facilities and supports a variety of shopping and cultural entertainment options. The nearby Annandale Country, Club, a PGA Course, and the Whisper Lake Country Club and Reunion Country Club give golfers multiple opportunities to take a swing at some of the state’s best courses. This attention to the city’s past, present and future has resulted in amazing recognitions and attracts residents seeking a lifestyle often referred to as “priceless.”
Only a 10 minute drive from Jackson, the state’s largest city and capital, Madison has incredible access to that city’s metropolis amenities. Residents seeking adventures farther away from home have less than a three hour drive to New Orleans, Memphis, Mobile or the Gulf Coast. Of course, the Jackson International Airport is only 20 minutes away if the rest of the world is your destination. As the sister city of Solleftea, Sweden, Madison is always opening its international doorway to additional opportunities for growth and development.
Madison regularly receives both state-wide and national acclaim for its quality of life. By having the state’s highest percent of high school and college graduates, the highest median home value, the highest percentage of married-family households and the highest per capita income, Madison has given the nickname of “Mississippi’s Shining Star.” As a certified retirement community that is nationally ranked as one of the best in the country, both young and old alike benefit from living in Madison. When you consider that Madison also has Mississippi’s lowest crime rate, and it becomes increasingly obvious why the city was ranked in the “Top Ten Towns for Families in America” by Family Circle magazine! |
